“Shamanism and the Bible: Is it Sorcery or Witchcraft?” excerpt from draft of “Meditate with me: The True Vine” a story of salvation from sorcery through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, written by Brian Cimins and Friends
Shamanism is a spiritual and cultural tradition that has been practiced by indigenous peoples around the world for thousands of years. It involves the use of spiritual practices and rituals to connect with the spirit world and seek guidance and healing. However, from a biblical perspective, shamanism is often considered to be a form of sorcery or witchcraft.
The Bible clearly condemns sorcery and witchcraft as evil practices that are associated with demonic powers. In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, the Israelites are warned against practicing sorcery or witchcraft, and in Leviticus 19:31, they are told not to turn to mediums or spiritists. In these passages, sorcery and witchcraft are seen as a form of rebellion against God and an attempt to gain power through supernatural means.
From a biblical perspective, shamanism is often considered to be a form of sorcery or witchcraft because it involves seeking guidance and healing through communication with spirits. The Bible teaches that all supernatural power and wisdom comes from God, and that seeking guidance from any other source is a form of rebellion against Him. In this sense, shamanism can be seen as an attempt to gain power and control over one’s life through supernatural means, which is a direct violation of God’s sovereignty and authority.
Another aspect of shamanism that is often considered to be sorcery or witchcraft from a biblical perspective is the use of psychoactive plants and substances in spiritual practices. In many indigenous cultures, these substances are used to induce trance states and facilitate communication with the spirit world. However, the Bible warns against the use of mind-altering substances in worship and spiritual practices, as they can lead to false beliefs and spiritual deception.
In conclusion, while shamanism is a rich and ancient spiritual tradition, it is seen as a form of sorcery or witchcraft from a biblical perspective. The Bible teaches that all supernatural power and wisdom comes from God, and that seeking guidance from any other source is a form of rebellion against Him. Additionally, the use of psychoactive substances in spiritual practices is seen as a violation of God’s instructions and can lead to false beliefs and spiritual deception.

Picture Notes: Snakes appear several times in the Bible, most notably in the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. In this story, a serpent tempts Eve to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge, leading to the downfall of humanity. The Bible also mentions snakes as symbols of evil and danger, such as the serpent that Moses lifted up to heal the Israelites of their snake bites. In other parts of the Bible, snakes are seen as objects of power and divinity, such as when Aaron’s staff turns into a snake in front of Pharaoh. Additionally, the Bible contains instructions on how to deal with venomous snakes and protect against their bites. Snakes are thus portrayed in the Bible as both a symbol of temptation and evil, and a symbol of divine power and protection.
