On Monday, October 16th, I called my old friend, BARRY GRIEFER, who has terminal brain cancer, to say hello, lift his spirits and pray with him. Even though its tough to ask, I always say, “How are you feeling? Any updates from the doctor?”

Today, Barry’s response was grim and filled with sadness…”Brian, the tumors are growing so fast, I’m now officially blind and the doctors told me I have less than 5 months to live.”

“Is there anything I can do Barry?”, I replied. He normally just asks me to pray with him or replies, “You already are just for calling me. How’s your family?” but today was different, today Barry confessed to me, “I am trying to plan my own funeral and do not have the money.”

It broke my heart and I replied, “Can I help you raise the funds, how much do you need?” Barry replied, “I’m very blessed, a local funeral home agreed to the minimal costs for my end of life requests, casket and above ground grave site for just $5,000”. I replied, “I will help you raise those funds within the Grappling and Jiu Jitsu community and Christian brothers and sisters community, is that ok with you Barry?” “Yes my son, thank you, ” Barry humbly replied.

That’s what got us here today.

UFC Hall of Famer, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell with Barry Griefer

Barry Griefer is now 72 years old and just received his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a few weeks ago, taking his test completely blind, sparring multiple opponents and performed the self defense portion of the test too. He is a spiritual warrior, child of God who never gave up, but now his time is near to leave this earth and he would just like to not be a burden on his family.

When people die, everyone spends $50-100 on flowers or donates to a charity, they honor the dead more than the living. Please help me honor a living legend, the most inspirational grappler on the planet, simply because, Barry Griefer never gave up.

Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the DEATH of His saints”. Barry knows Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and dedicated his life to serve Him alone many years ago. Please consider donating to a warrior, on and off the mats, who will one day soon meet His Lord in heaven.

Please donate any amount you can, YouCaring takes 0% and 100% of the funds donated will be given to Barry and or the funeral home he has selected. We realize sometimes financial times are challenged, but every SHARE on social media helps raise $37 towards the goal.

God Bless YOU for reading, sharing, donating and CARING enough to read all the way through. We might cry when Barry leaves this earth, but we must remember, God will rejoice…please help us help him leave this earth with dignity, knowing he didn’t burden anyone, let’s help him “lie down in green pastures” and peacefully leave this earth.

barry-griefer-fundraiser-coverNOTE: 100% of donations will help pay for the $5,000 final rites and funeral services for our brother, Barry. (YouCaring takes 0%) – We know sometimes financial strife exists in like, please know every SHARE on social media raises $37 from your friends and family members for someone you care about. August 1997 – Elizabeth, New Jersey – More than 400 people packed into the Bayside Academy of Martial Arts in Elizabeth, New Jersey on a hot summer day. This was my first amateur shootfighting match and I was nervous.  Our coach and instructor of Rising Sun asked for “tough matches” and the promoter obliged.  My training partner “Big” John Makowski was unconscious in the center of the ring for nearly ten minutes without moving and I was up next.  Everyone watched the stretcher come in and take him away, thank God he was fine, but everyone was worried he broke his neck.  Minutes later, Big Dan kicked off the extra ice from the center where John was just lying and said, “Are you ready?” and I finally faced one of my greatest fears in life, to fight someone.  Beyond the physical benefits, the psychological benefit of facing that fear proved to be pivotal in life, when things got challenging, physically, spiritually and financially in life.  We all face tribulation in life, Jesus promised it, how will YOU handle it when it’s ‘your turn’?

BACK TO THE MATCH…What do you do when a Sambo Master heelhooks you? What do you do when you fall down in life? Do you give up? Well, in grappling or Jiu Jitsu, sometimes YES…but in life, NEVER GIVE UP…You Get Back up!!

This was their 2nd event in August 1997, but their first event was May 1997 and featured Matt Serra’s MMA debut.

In 1998, Brian Cimins founded Grapplers Quest and helped create America’s First Submission Grappling Tournament Circuit.

Equality for Women in Competition in Grappling, Jiu Jitsu and MMA Plus The REAL History of Female Pro Divisions in ADCC and Grapplers Quest By Brian Cimins

Taking off the first few months of 2013 has allowed a lot of time of reflection about the past, present and future of Grappling and my overall life balance in general.  I’m proudly doing 1-2 hours per day of meditation to help quiet my mind, relax my body and heal my mind and soul.

Spending time with my two children along with working on several Coaching clients and the 2013 Grapplers Quest season keeps me busy, but not overwhelmed or stressed.

During one of my meditation sessions, I focused on remembering my proudest professional moments in life and wanted to share a few with you…

5076652294_433fae794a_z

One of my proudest accomplishments and life moments was when Women could finally stand alongside Men at the “ADCC World Championships in 2005”. I’m proud that the “Professional Female Grappling” legacy has been maintained since inception, but It didn’t come easy and no one ever told the full story how it all came to fruition against all odds.

I forgot how hard I struggled to petition and literally beg for Women to be involved in the first ever Abu Dhabi Combat Club  World Championship Grappling Event in the United States in May 2005. I remember overhearing, “The Event could never be held in Abu Dhabi again once Women were invited.” I couldn’t believe the resistance, but I refused to take NO for an answer.

For two months, I battled with the ADCC committee, which was completely against allowing Women into the tournament until they finally approved the proposal for Women to Compete at ADCC, but sadly refused to pay the Female Purses.  I refused to give up, accepted their challenge of, “Approved But We Won’t Pay for it” and immediately sprung into action to secure the Female Tournament Purses and sponsorship for the ADCC 2005 in Long Beach, California.  I pushed hard, but in the early days, even $1,000 was a lot from a sponsor, so it was a long uphill battle.

kyra adcc-podiumOur one main sponsor who promised to cover ALL of the Women’s Purses, only to have them completely bail on us just three weeks before the competition, abandoning their investment into paying for the Women’s Cash Prizes, but we still didn’t give up.

Gilberto from Jiu Jitsu Pro Gear (http://JiuJitsuProGear.com) and I (Brian Cimins from Grapplers Quest) paid for the Women’s Division Purses out of pocket from retail sales from the event because the ladies deserved the same honor and opportunity. I couldn’t let this opportunity pass for Women in Grappling, I knew it’s significance.

I would do it over, again and again, because I’m so glad to see how far the sport has come since the dark ages.   I never fully grasped how the “Women in ADCC” was actually a Gender Equality and Female Empowerment movement victory and was a turning point in the history of grappling.

Sometimes when you are pushing forward so hard, down in the trenches, you forget to look up once in a while and realize all of the amazing people you met along the way and how many challenging situations you faced – and the Women of Grappling deserved the same spotlight, it was TIME.  Remembering this proud moment makes it all worth it for me.

Another crazy memory popped up while writing this, I remembered that Alicia Anthony and Gazzy Parman and many of the Top Female Athletes in the Sport put together a Plaque and Beautiful book of hand written “Thank You” cards, but the ADCC Committee blocked the presentation of the award at the 2005 World Championships, so instead, the ladies presented it to me at World Grappling Games 2005 hosted by http://OnTheMat.com – that award meant the World to me and still proudly hangs on my wall today.

Ultimately, I want to Thank ALL of the amazing WOMEN who helped be pioneers for Submission Grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and inspirations to many future generations to come.

Searching through old Grapplers Quest tapes, I came across footage from  the first Professional Female No-Gi Grappling Tournament ever held in the World on Saturday, February 21, 2003 at Grapplers Quest, nearly two years before ADCC “approved” Women to compete alongside Men.

To celebrate the historic moment for the “First Female Professional Grappling Tournament” and commemorate this historic moment for eternally, I will be posting all of these previously lost matches for Free on YouTube at: http://LiveGrappling.com during this week sponsored by Super Body Care (http://SuperBodyCare.com), Onnit Supplements (http://StressExpo.com) and Meditation and Hypnosis training from http://HowToHealYourLife.com

Thank you for believing in Grapplers Quest, the Sport of Grappling and yourselves – we are evolving and will continue to push through the peaks and valleys of life, together as one.

On the horizon, the first women’s match headlines UFC 156 with Rhonda Rousey. The future is bright for men and women alike in Grappling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts!

With Your Happiness and Success in Mind Always,

Brian J. Cimins,

Founder of Grapplers Quest

Daily Positive Affirmation for Kids and Parents with Brian Cimins – Every Day in Every Way, I’m Getting Better

Please enjoy another “Positive Affirmation for Kids” with Logan John Cimins, 5-year-old son of Life Coach and Grapplers Quest founder, Brian Cimins

“Every Day in Every Way, I’m Getting Better”
– Logan Cimins inspired by American Monk, Burt Goldman

This great positive affirmation is inspired by one of my mentors, Burt Goldman, aka “The American Monk”. It can be used at ANY age, especially for people who’ve been sick or with some type of long term illness.

People who consistently wait for others to ask, “How are you doing?” or “How are you feeling?”, just to launch into a 30 minute conversation about how much pain they are in or how bad something hurts or aches. Complaining and reliving an “old injury” is just magnifying the problem to you and the listening party.

Complaining doesn’t allow you to focus on your progress, however big or small, you are just wallowing in your pain. I broke my back in a martial arts competition on December 2, 2000 and was nearly paralyzed. As a martial arts event promoter, I refused to let my scary story give a black eye to the sport. I set out to completely recreate my mental frame of mind to help others deal with challenging situations, something life always seems to deliver.

Even if you are in pain, please realize EVERYONE “suffers” in their own way. By responding with a more uplifting and inspirational response, even if you are in pain when the person asks, you will quickly accelerate your own healing, even if just in your mind – at least it’s a start. Start healing in your mind first and YOUR body will follow. You must believe in this, if you really want to live pain free.

Give it a try, start today and repeat this Affirmation and Mantra every day for 30 days, “Every Day in Every Way, I’m Getting Better”.

Until next time, BE positive 🙂

With your success and happiness in mind
Your Strategy Coach,
Brian J. Cimins
